Covering Your Personal Property

If you rent a home, condo, or apartment, renters’ insurance is necessary to keep your property protected. However, renters’ insurance goes far beyond just coverage on your personal property.

How much coverage do you need?

  • Personal property: If you imagine taking your home, turning it upside down, and shaking it, what would fall out? That would all be covered under your personal property coverage. Take a quick inventory of it all and come up with a ballpark value. Another thing to consider is special items such as jewelry, collections, firearms, and any other high value items. These items have limits on the policy and should be listed “scheduled” items.
  • Liability: Most renters’ policies will include a base liability of $100,000. Sometimes this is not enough and could leave you vulnerable to a lawsuit.  Figuring the amount of liability you need is pretty simple…the more assets you have, the more liability you need. For some, you will need more than what the policy can offer. In those cases, you would get a umbrella policy.
